What is Semana Santa?

Semana Santa (Holy Week) is one of Seville’s most profound and moving cultural experiences. Taking place in the week leading up to Easter, it transforms the city through a series of solemn yet spectacular processions organised by historic religious brotherhoods, many of which have existed for centuries. Elaborate pasos (floats) bearing sacred sculptures are carried through the streets by costaleros, accompanied by music, incense and candlelight, creating an atmosphere that is both deeply spiritual and visually extraordinary.
During Semana Santa, Seville slows down and becomes intensely alive at the same time. Streets may be closed or crowded at certain moments, and daily routines adapt to the rhythm of the processions. For visitors, this is a rare opportunity to witness the city at its most authentic and emotionally resonant — whether watching a procession pass quietly at night, hearing a lone saeta sung from a balcony, or simply feeling the collective hush of the crowd. While it can require a little flexibility, Semana Santa is widely regarded as one of the most unforgettable times to experience Seville.

What does this mean for my stay?

During Semana Santa, parts of the historic centre may experience temporary street closures and higher footfall, particularly in the evenings and at night when processions take place. Access routes can change at short notice, and journeys may take a little longer than usual. This is all part of the rhythm of the week and something locals and visitors alike adapt to with patience and good humour.
At El Nido, we will always help you plan around the processions — whether that means advising on the best times to move around the city, suggesting quieter routes, or recommending vantage points to watch a procession pass. Many guests find that embracing the slower pace and unpredictability of Semana Santa becomes part of the experience, offering moments of extraordinary beauty and atmosphere that simply don’t exist at any other time of year.

What is the Feria de Abril?

Feria de Abril (The April Fair) is Seville at its most joyful and exuberant. Held for one week in spring, usually a couple of weeks after Easter, the city comes together in a celebration of music, dance, food and tradition. The fair takes place in a purpose-built area known as El Real de la Feria, where hundreds of colourful casetas (marquees) line the streets. By day, families gather to eat and socialise; by night, the fair transforms into a lively, elegant celebration filled with flamenco dresses, horse-drawn carriages and dancing that continues into the early hours.

Although deeply rooted in local tradition, Feria is wonderfully welcoming to visitors. Even without access to private casetas, there is plenty to see and enjoy — from strolling the fairgrounds and watching Sevillanos in traditional dress to enjoying the atmosphere, music and street food. Feria de Abril offers a unique glimpse into the social heart of the city and is widely considered one of the most enjoyable and festive times to experience Seville.

What does this mean for my stay?

During Feria week, Seville feels especially animated, with longer evenings, busy restaurants and a celebratory atmosphere throughout the city. Transport to and from the fairgrounds can be busier than usual, particularly in the evenings, and some restaurants may operate extended or irregular hours. Planning ahead can be helpful, especially for dining and taxis.

We’re always happy to offer guidance — from explaining how to reach the fairgrounds, to suggesting the best times to visit, or recommending places to eat away from the busiest areas. Many guests find that even a short visit to the Feria becomes a highlight of their stay, offering a joyful counterpoint to the city’s more contemplative traditions and a wonderful way to experience Seville at its most vibrant.
